Whilst not detracting from the allure and enjoyment of underwater exploration, there are potential dangers associated with operating personal submarines that owners and charterers should be aware of:
- Mechanical Failures: Personal submarines can experience malfunctions or technical issues like any mechanical equipment.
- Training and Experience: The operator must undergo specialist training, while the crew must know all the dangers and how to handle emergencies.
- Pressure and Decompression Risks: Underwater environments subject occupants to high pressures. Improper ascent or descent can lead to decompression sickness, commonly known as “the bends,” which can be fatal or cause serious health issues.
- Collision Hazards: The underwater environment is unpredictable and submarines may encounter submerged objects, reefs, or other marine vessels. Collisions can damage the submarine and cause injury to occupants.
- Environmental Impact: Submarines can disturb marine life and their habitats. Reckless operation or contact with sensitive marine ecosystems can cause irreversible damage to the underwater environment.
- Rescue Challenges: As was saw with the Titan submersible, a rescue operation can be incredibly dangerous, extremely difficult and time-consuming. “Time” being… a limited commodity in these extreme circumstances.
- Navigation and Communication Difficulties: Underwater navigation and communication can be challenging, with limited visibility and signal reach.
- Air Supply Limitations: Personal submarines have a limited air supply and air consumption must be managed and monitored carefully.
- Legal and Regulatory Compliance: Countries have varying regulations regarding personal submarine operations. Superyacht owners and charterers must ensure they comply with all relevant laws and safety standards.
- Cost and Maintenance: Personal submarines are expensive to purchase, maintain, and repair.
Invest in high-quality and well-maintained submarines for the safest and best enjoyment, undergo comprehensive training, and prioritise safety and responsible operation while exploring the underwater world.
